This is an evolving stream-o-consciousness dump from my conversations with Kathleen Affholter about the Iceland gig.

To Do:

What precision required for each parameter including geocoding?

Go to the island? Ferry? Will we still be in that city on the north coast? Akureri, university where we will be doing labs.

Should we visit Pellisippi in March?

Do all of the EC people need to take one or both of the chemistry and geology courses or just the one that she/I teach?

The idea is that the CCG and HIP would work together to design, build, test and deploy gear that would support a variety of field work by a geology class and a chemistry class in Iceland during July, 2013. This would cover a wide range of capabilities, from hand-held geocoded water parameter sampling to a WiFi hotspot backed by a server running Apache, Mediawiki, etc. for the students and faculty to use.

They have access to Vernier probes that measure conductivity and temperature (may need higher temperature range), possibly CO2 probes. What model numbers? Do they geocode? (Doubtful).

Wind power? Check the wind speed at the locations on the map.

GPS for iPads? No, consider the Nexus 7:

Cell or satellite uplink would provide Internet connectivity in some locations. This would be done through the WiFi hotspot so that everyone could share the uplink. Or, could we tether a cell phone off of a LittleFe and use it as an access point.

Ferry to that island rather than flying? Stay overnight and then return the next day.

Make duplicate kits, base unit (yin and yang) and sampling unit (karma and dogma); redundancy, split group.

Students and faculty would use iPads, ability to cache data/notes locally and then upload to a server in the evening. Either Mediawiki or possibly something ala Google Drive running locally on the unit. Backup to the other unit (each has a spare drive which is a dupe of the others).

Wind, solar or both? Probably solar although would almost certainly have to be manually tracking.

Where can we get cell service? Build a mashup and start annotating it.

How to tie this into XSEDE? Talk to ScottL, maybe have a feed from the field during the XSEDE13 conference? Use an XSEDE resource from the field to analyze/visualize some of the data?

What if any climate change indicators could we measure? Find historical temperature records and make contemporary readings in the same places? Sea level elevation? Sea temperature? Plant and/or animal ranges?

Figure-out if/how we can accentuate the movement of two tectonic plates, enough so that in ~1 day we could observe it directly.

Where's Fe heartbeat program. Unit serial number, IP, timestamp and location (as best as can be determined with IP service or GPS) uploaded every 15 minutes (default, adjustable) to hopper -> database -> visualized via a Google Maps mashup that's updated every N minutes. Started in /etc/rc.local as a detached process.

One of the places is cabins, NE, sounds like we would do some work to cover part of the cost of staying there.

Differential GPS? Is it necessary? Handheld units as well as USB for the sampling and base units.
